Mesabi Metallics Co. LLC in Nashwauk is a taconite mining and pellet production facility. The facility’s main processes are ore crushing and handling, the indurating furnace, and pellet handling.

The draft air permit revises certain monitoring requirements and authorizes construction of additional space heaters and diesel and gasoline storage tanks. The draft permit includes identical limits and monitoring for the new equipment compared to similar existing equipment.

An air quality operating permit is required for certain existing facilities or the construction of new facilities that have the potential to emit a significant level of any regulated pollutant. The permit includes all requirements for operation and procedures, applicable rules, emission standards, monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting. If additional conditions change and modifications are necessary, the MPCA may review and amend the permit.
