We invite you to comment on the draft 401 Water Quality Certification for the Bridge No. 89850 Replacement project in Redwood and Renville Counties.
Bridge #89850 is a 170-foot three-span bridge built in 1903 that is currently closed due to structural deficiencies. Redwood and Renville counties are proposing to remove the existing bridge and install a new 354-foot three-span bridge approximately 100 feet east. Redwood County Road (CR) 17 and Renville CR-21 will be re-aligned east towards the new bridge. 37 linear feet of the Minnesota River will be impacted for the new bridge piers. The existing roadways will be left in place to act as a maintenance road to clear debris after higher flow events. 2.4 acres of wetlands will be filled to accommodate the new roadway.
A 401 Water Quality Certification is required when an individual, business, or property owner proposes construction-related activities near a navigable lake, river, stream, or adjacent wetland. The MPCA reviews projects to ensure they will not violate Minnesota's more protective water quality standards. The 401 certification becomes an enforceable component of the associated federal license or permits issued under the Clean Water Act.
