We invite you to comment on the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed Dem-Con Landfill SW-290 MSW Allocation/Airspace Conversion Project.
Dem-Con Landfill, LLC proposes to build the landfill at its environmental campus near Shakopee. It plans to convert approximately 81 acres of its permitted construction and demolition (C&D) landfill into a new municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill. The proposed landfill will be on land currently being mined for limestone.
The scale of this project requires it to go through the EIS process, which is an extensive environmental review that includes detailed information about the project’s potential for environmental impacts. The EIS also provides project alternatives and identifies methods to reduce environmental effects.
The new MSW landfill will accept waste from the Twin Cities metro area and Nicollet, Le Sueur, and Sibley counties. The Twin Cities area generates nearly 3.5 million tons of garbage annually and continues to send more waste to landfills each year.
The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is not a decision and does not determine whether the project moves forward. It is an information-gathering document used to inform decision-makers including those issuing land use and environmental permits that are required for the project. The environmental review process provides an opportunity for public input during the public comment period.
